Economic Crime Conference 2017

One of the challenges that charities are currently facing is the increasing threat of economic crime – Economic crime covers a wide area that can cover issues such as fraud that can take place internally within an organisation such as embezzlement or bribery. This can also take the form of cyber crime through the theft of a charity’s data and the usage of it after the theft has taken place.

In hearing different perspectives from a range of organisations, this conference will help delegates get a better understanding of how economic crime is being tackled in a wider sense and ways to apply this knowledge within their own charities. 

The conference aims to give delegates an increased awareness of the vast landscape of economic crime and some ideas for tackling it and its various forms. Delegates will hear from charity speakers and sector experts who have experienced either fraud or another crime, how they managed it and the plans they have put into place to prevent it.

Chair’s welcome and setting the scene

What is economic crime? How does it affect charities? The chair will set the scene and give an overview of some of the issues that will be covered during the conference.

This opening session will address the various risks that economic crime poses, not only to the charity sector but to the wider community and will touch on how the City of London Police are working to prevent it.

Bribery and Corruption

One of the ways that charities can unknowingly, charities can become involved in either bribery or corruption, through accepting what may be seen as a gift in exchange for a good or service.

This session will explain the challenges that charities face, the legal framework and controls you can put in place to protect your organisation.

Common Reporting Standards
Some charities will be required to make reports to HMRC from May 2017 on the people that they give grants to under the Common Reporting Standards. This session will cover who is affected, what you are required to report and how to comply.

Digital Crime: Protecting your Charity
Internet scams and phishing are just some of the ways that charity data can be illegally collected online. This will look at some of the threats that you need to protect against when it comes to protecting your data. The session will also explore how data can be used to commit crime and how it can impact your charity.

Internal Fraud & Abuse

It is important to be aware of vulnerable areas within your charity where internal fraud could potentially take place such as the invoicing and travel expense processes. 

This session will discuss issues such as what to do if fraud is identified within your organisation, things to look out for and what controls you should have in place.

This session will look at how to build resilience in your organisation through your budgeting processes and identifying the resources you need to combat economic crime within your organisation.

Written notice of cancellations up to 21 days before an event will incur a 25% administration fee. After this time period, a 100% cancellation charge will apply. Substitutions (i.e. name changes) for the course booked can be made free of charge.

CFG reserves the right to cancel any event two weeks prior to the event date. You will be entitled to a full refund or given the opportunity to transfer to an alternative date. However we regret that we cannot refund any travel or accommodation costs incurred by delegates. CFG accepts no liability if an event is cancelled or postponed for reasons beyond our reasonable control resulting from an act of God, governmental regulation, fire, war, terrorist activity or civil commotion.

It may be necessary for reasons beyond our control to change the date, time or the venue at any time prior to the event date. If this occurs you will be informed of changes and given the opportunity to cancel or transfer to an alternative date.
