We are delighted to announce the CFDG Investment Conference 2011. Once again we will be bringing together an informative mix of speakers from the voluntary and corporate sectors, providing a comprehensive view and increasing your confidence in managing your organisations investments.
Charities are in a rather unique position of juggling the views of the trustees, and the interests and reputation of the charity, whilst trying to ensure that any investment of funds are profitable and safe. This two stream conference aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need, to aid this process.
The day opens with a plenary from Elroy Dimson, Professor of Finance at London Business School, with an overview of the Investment Landscape and some ideas on which areas may be of interest to you and your organisation.
During the day we have a packed programme bringing together a mix of corporate and voluntary sector speakers with sessions on Property Investment, Common Misconceptions, Socially Responsible Investment, Selecting and Evaluating your Fund Manager, and much more!
The Conference gives you access to a variety of professional firms in the exhibition area, providing a wealth of experience for you to draw on, and discuss current issues and organisational needs. The structure of the programme also ensures there is ample time for networking with your fellow professionals both during the day, and at the drinks reception at the close of Conference. The conference can also support your personal development plan with five hours of CPD.
The Reception
All delegates are invited to join CFDG at the drinks reception at the close of the day. The reception provides an excellent opportunity to meet with our speakers, and to extend the networking part of the day.
The Exhibition
There will be an exhibition alongside the conference programme. Exhibitors working in a range of service areas will be available for delegates to meet, ask questions and share information.
The informal setting is an excellent opportunity to find products and service suppliers who can assist in tackling your charities' problems and who can help to make the management of your charity more efficient.
The conference timetable allows delegates plenty of opportunity to browse the exhibition and network during breaks.

Long-term strategy for charitable funds management - this presentation is only available to conference attendees. Please email events@cfdg.org.uk if you attended and would like a copy.
Elroy will provide an update on global evidence on the long-term equity risk premium in 19 different countries over 111 years. Historically, equities beat inflation and cash and bonds in every market. Yet the World equity market beat bonds by under 4%, and equities now offer a modest forward-looking reward. Can charitable funds maintain their real value for future generations, or are they disbursing too much? I will share my thinking on investment returns and sustainable levels of spending.
Prof Elroy Dimson, London Business School

Often the barriers to improving the lives of the most marginalised people and communities are lack of money and the constraints place on that money. Social investment is a new source of funding to supplement government funding and charitable giving in solving social problems. Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) raise social investment to fund preventative work with investors being repaid based on an improved social outcome. This session will focus on the potential for SIBs, criteria for a successful SIB and the technical guidance in how to assess the feasibility of a SIB idea.
Emily Bolton, Social Finance

Will the summer of discontent lead into an autumn of anguish and a winter of woe… and what is on the horizon for UK equities? Charities, endowments and foundations traditionally have a meaningful exposure to UK equities. Richard Buxton, the Head of UK Equities at Schroders and widely recognised as one of the top UK equity fund managers in the city, discusses the outlook for investors.
Richard Buxton, Schroders
14:45-15:30 SESSION 5
Bonds are managed based on a flawed concept: the irrationality of bond indices. David will show that managers who use a bond index are gaining exposures to the most indebted countries, the most leveraged industries and the most highly geared corporations.
David Thompson, European Credit Management
Simon will be discussing some practical considerations from an FD’s perspective: Setting policy & strategy- What are your investments for? Who is responsible for the investment policy? The Role of the FD – turning an abstract idea into something specific, short range cash-flow forecasting, setting the context for budgets in the light of your charity’s balance sheet, and much more.
