The programme for Finance Matters, Hot Topics & Core Essentials is outlined below. There are two Plenary sessions open to all delegates and a further four sessions with a choice of two streams. 1A: Fundraising

This session will outline the six key trends on how charities can raise money from the 21st-century donor and how the finance and resource team can work with fundraisers to help raise more money.

1B: Tax Update

The theme for Tony's talk is Direct Tax - Current Issues for charities. In this session, he will cover: Gift Aid - an update and Gift Aid - HMRC audits; Substantial donors as well as looking at Anti-avoidance, the 2008 Budget and the Finance Bill. Jacki will be presenting an update on current VAT issues and looking at relevant VAT cases.

2A: Ethical Investment: The Current Position & Future Story

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of the first UK ethical fund. Barry presents data from the latest Ethical Consumerism Report and discusses how wider growth and awareness around ethical consumerism may be the catalyst for a significant up turn in demand for socially responsible investment.

2B: Law Update

In this session, Ros will be presenting an update on recent charity law issues with a special focus with particular emphasis on public benefit and the Charities Act 2006.

3A: The FD as a Leader

"Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right." - Breckell argues that whilst doing the right thing is an important discipline for a charity Finance Director, more is required and that the role is essentially one of leadership rather than just management. We must do the right thing.

3B: IT Update

John will be looking at the subject "How will technology shape Charities in the 21st Century?". He will also talk about "Technology as a tool to drive collaboration" and ask the question "Will IT lead the transparency agenda"?. He will also cover World class reporting systems; The future of Accounting Software; Security - when will it get to taken seriously?; Social networking and SAAS (Software as a Service) as well as mobile computing.

4A: Accountability

The Accountability and Transparency of Charities is gaining greater importance. This session will explore this area and the wider implications for the relationships with stakeholders and the culture of the Charity.

What’s the difference between contracts and grants, and why does it matter? This session seeks to answer these questions with reference to the underlying commercial, accounting and taxation issues

Resource Allocation and Performance Management

Most charities face resource constraints and allocation of scarce sources is a vital aspect. It is critical to link this to the organisation's strategy and plans for the future. This session will also consider the linkage to performance measurement and the need to ensure that negative drivers such as cost ratios do not corrupt the process.
