Professor Cochrane will be speaking at the annual CFDG IT Conference: “Getting IT Right”, on Tuesday 16th March. 04 March 2010: CFDG manifesto asks for a level playing field for charities The Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) has today launched its election manifesto, “A level playing field”, asking for proportionate, effective regulation; the opportunity to deliver innovative public services; a tax system that recognises how charities operate and does not unduly penalise them; and the development of a social investment wholesale bank. 02 March 2010: Expert group on expenses makes final recommendationsCharities should be encouraged to consider publishing expenses of individual trustees and senior managers but disclosure should not be mandatory, according to a report by an independent expert group. 23 February 2010: Charity Finance Directors’ Group announces new Charity Banking ForumThe Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) has announced plans to set up a Charity Banking Forum. 23 February 2010: Charities remain anxious as recession hits Third SectorNew research by the Charity Finance Directors' Group (‘CFDG’), the Institute of Fundraising (‘IoF’) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (‘PwC’) has shown that charities remain cautious about the future despite the economic upturn. However, although the majority still expect a fall in overall income in the next 12 months, charities are more positive about the future than they were in May 2009. These findings, from PKF and CFDG’s 2009 Risk Survey, highlight the necessity of embedding good risk management systems that look to long-term as well as short-term risks. CFDG’s 2009 Risk Conference – Securing Your Foundations will support the understanding and development of risk management systems, providing a wide range of sessions on different areas of risk, stimulating discussion and the sharing of practical advice. 06 October 2009: CFDG and Agenda Consulting launch Finance CountTM 2010The Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) and Agenda Consulting have launched Finance Count 2010, the leading financial management benchmarking study for the Third Sector. Finance Count is a tailor-made tool, providing highlights of performance on over 200 key measures and a comparison of participants’ performance with seven to twenty peers of their choice. 28 September 2009: CFDG launch 'Understanding the Voluntary Sector course' in BristolThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) is pleased to announce that their successful training course, ‘Understanding the voluntary sector’ will be held in Bristol for the first time on 22nd October 2009. 15 September 2009: CFDG puts sustainability guidance onlineThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) have published their sustainability guidance online. A summary of Sustainability in Practice: monitoring and reporting and the appendices are publicly available on CFDG’s website, with the full publication available to CFDG members. CFDG’s comprehensive guidance addresses how and why charities should act and report on their environmental and social sustainability. 11 September 2009: CFDG welcomes new trusteesThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) welcomes two new trustees, Sally O'Neill and Mark Hilton, to its Board, and bids a fond farewell to two long serving trustees, Melvin Coleman and Tom Sterry MBE. 01 September 2009: CFDG CEO to move to RNIBKeith Hickey, Chief Executive of the Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) is to become the Group Director – Resources, at the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). 25 August 2009: CFDG launches South West and Wales conferenceThe Charity Finance Directors’ Group (CFDG) is delighted to announce their first conference in the South West and Wales. The conference will be held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff on 1st October 2009, and features keynote addresses from Andrew Hind, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, and Robert Taylor, Chief Executive of Age Concern and Help the Aged in Wales. 04 August 2009: Most big charities are now investing ethicallyOver half of large UK charities have an ethical investment policy, according to a survey conducted by the Charity Finance Directors' Group (‘CFDG’) and the EIRIS Foundation. The survey of 164 CFDG members found that 60% of charities with investments over £1million had an ethical investment policy. Meanwhile only 25% of smaller charities with investments of under £1million invest ethically. 14 July 2009: Charity expectations of the recession 50% worse than in December 08, says new researchNew research by the Charity Finance Directors' Group (‘CFDG’), the Institute of Fundraising (‘IoF’) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (‘PwC’) has shown that more charities are now feeling the effects of the recession, and that 56% of charities expect a decline in their income going forward. Overall, 80% of charities are expecting income to remain flat or to decline. The new research was conducted in May 2009 amongst members of CFDG and the IoF, and it provides an update on the first “Managing in a Downturn” survey, conducted in November 2008. 05 June 2009: CFDG running second ‘Understanding the Voluntary Sector’ course in LondonThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) are bringing their popular new training course, ‘Understanding the Voluntary Sector’ back to London on 9th July. At the first date in London the course was sold-out, and participants called it an ‘excellent day’, ‘really enjoyable, interesting and informative’. 04 June 2009: Chartered Surveyors and NCVO launch property advice lineRICS (The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) in partnership with NCVO and the CFDG* has launched Charity Property Help, a service through which Chartered Surveyors provide free advice to voluntary organisations and charities on all property related issues. 18 May 2009: CFDG launches major new guidance – Sustainability in Practice: monitoring and reportingThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (“CFDG”) is launching major new guidance for charities, “Sustainability in Practice: monitoring and reporting”, at their annual conference on 19th May. For the first time charities will now have guidance on how and why they should act and report on their environmental and social sustainability, with best practice examples drawn from a wide range of organisations. 12 May 2009: Brookes to say, ‘charities are still too insular’ at CFDG conferenceAt the Charity Finance Directors' Group’s 2009 Annual Conference Martin Brookes, keynote speaker and chief executive of New Philanthropy Capital will say that, “many charities are still too insular, and do not cooperate enough with each other in sharing their results or explaining how they are measuring their impact.” 7 May 2009: David Blunkett to speak at CFDG's Northern conferenceThe Rt Hon David Blunkett MP will be the keynote speaker at the Charity Finance Directors' Group’s second Northern conference, ‘Steering Your Charity Through Changing Times.’ David Blunkett is the MP for Sheffield, Brightside, and is the author of the report, ‘Mutual Action, Common Purpose: empowering the Third Sector’. He will be sharing his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. 5 May 2009: Research will examine recession's impact during 2009Authoritative research into managing in a downturn, carried out at the end of 2008 by the Institute of Fundraising and the Charity Finance Directors Group ('CFDG') together with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP ('PwC'), is to be repeated for Spring 2009. The resulting report will emphasise the changing nature of attitudes to recession - and its continued impact on the sector - six months on from the initial piece of research. 7 April 2009: CFDG recommends systematic protection for charity investmentsThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) have asked the Government to create a separate depositor class for charities, regardless of size or governance structure. This is CFDG’s recommendation in their submission to HM Treasury’s consultation on the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Currently the FSCS does not recognise any difference between charities and other organisations and individuals, and this has meant that only some charities who are looking at losses in the Icelandic banks are covered. 6 April 2009: CFDG shows charities how to manage in a recessionThe Charity Finance Directors' Group’s 2009 Annual Conference, ‘Managing in a Recession’ will be held at the QEII Centre on 19th May 2009. CFDG is pleased to announce Martin Brookes from New Philanthropy Capital, Mark Watts from RSPCA and Kevin Brennan MP as the plenary speakers for the conference. 3 April 2009: HMRC heeds CFDG advice over partial exemptionHMRC has announced the changes to the VAT partial exemption system that were advocated by the Charity Finance Directors' Group in their response to HMRC's consultation of September 2008. We are pleased to note this on-going evidence of the success of CFDG's advocacy work, which aims to reduce the burden of red-tape on charities and to promote flexible, proportionate legislation for the sector. 31 March 2009: CFDG outlines additional help needed from government in current recessionThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) have submitted their recommendations to HM Treasury for the 2009/10 Budget. This year CFDG's budget submission focuses on extra help that HM Revenue and Customs and Treasury could provide to the sector during the recession. Major recommendations focus on Gift Aid, VAT, pensions and the removal of the VAT Staff Hire Concession. 20 March 2009: Something for everyone at CFDG’s largest ever IT ConferenceWise dolphins, a John Cleese impersonator, the de-globalisation of cyberspace and over 200 delegates made for an interesting and varied day at CFDG’s largest ever IT conference on Thursday 19th March at the Royal College of Surgeons. 04 March 2009: CFDG holds training session on contracts and grantsThe Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) is pleased to announce a one-off training session on contracts and grants, to be held in London on 30th April. The session will be open to all charities, and is being run in conjunction with the law firm Bates Wells & Braithwaite. 16 Feb 2009: CFDG’s ‘Understanding the Voluntary Sector’ course launches in BirminghamOn the 18th March the Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) will be holding their new training course, ‘Understanding the Voluntary Sector,’ in Birmingham. This will be the first time they have held a training course outside of London, and is an exciting extension of their services. 13 Feb 2009: Sector leaders band together on tax issuesStuart Etherington, NCVO, Stephen Bubb, ACEVO, Lindsay Boswell, Institute of Fundraising, Keith Hickey, Charity Finance Directors' Group and John Low, Charities Aid Foundation attended a meeting today with the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Stephen Timms MP, to discuss proposals for further progress on Gift Aid reform and to address the issue of irrecoverable VAT. 10 Feb 2009: Charity salaries holding steadyCharity salaries are holding steady despite the economic gloom: some 90% of charities expect to award a general pay rise in the coming year, although the average expected rise is down 0.7% from last year, to 2.5%. Almost 10% of charities are not expecting to offer any pay rise. These are the headline results from the 2009 Charity Finance Directors' Group and Hays Salary and Employment Survey, which had over 550 respondents. 20 Jan 2009: Finance and IT directors must be influential, says Robina ChathamDr. Robina Chatham, visiting fellow at Cranfield School of Management has said, “Finance Directors and IT Directors often lack the influence that their position demands and that their organisations need.
